Ruby and I are working on a vegetable garden. This is our second year of production. Her favorite vegetables are tomatoes or as she says, “maters.” This year we tied a new growing technique of putting cow manure in the little hole that we planted “them maters in.” They seem to be thriving, except for a little problem with the blackbirds who are feasting on the leaves. We solved that problem by poking a wire into the ground right next to the plants, so it sticks the birds if they get too close. Ruby doesn’t care for the blackbirds, but she loves the doves that come around and bob their heads as they walk.
