Ruby’s family didn’t have any money for toys when she was little. “If you got a doll for Christmas,” Ruby said, “you was flyin'." They made their toys out of sticks and mud. She said they had this mud around her house that was “real good for packin'.” There was an old man who showed the children how to make horses from sticks and packed mud. Then they would bake them a little bit in the oven to harden them up. The old man would take a discarded shoe and cut the soles out and make little saddles for the horses.
