The colored woman found some burlap and cut it into a vest, stitched it up and sewed pockets into it. She made each child a vest. Ruby’s daddy came home that afternoon with the fat-meat and the colored woman sewed pieces of the fat into the pockets of the vest. She wrapped each child in a vest and put them all to bed. When they woke up the next morning their chest colds were cured, and their “fevers fried that fat just like bacon.” When the doctor arrived that morning, he said to the colored woman, “yes, you did the right thing puttin’ that fat-meat on them children.”
